This unique spiritual journey offers participants the opportunity to discover the teachings, rituals, sacred music, dances, and philosophy of the Bwiti tradition in a respectful and culturally authentic setting.

Bwiti is a traditional spiritual path practiced primarily in Gabon and, to a lesser extent, Cameroon and the Republic of the Congo. It combines ancestral beliefs, ritual, music, dance, prayer and in many lineages, the ceremonial use of the iboga plant.

Purpose:

Initiation traditionally marks entry into the Bwiti community. It symbolizes death and rebirth, spiritual transformation, connection with ancestors, and commitment to a lifelong path of learning and service.

Typical Initiation:

Preparation may include: fasting, prayer, instruction, cleansing rituals, ceremonial clothing, continuous drumming and chanting, supervised iboga consumption, visionary experiences, and a welcoming ceremony into the community. Ceremonies often last from two to seven days, depending on the lineage.

Why People Participate:

Reasons include spiritual growth, healing from grief or trauma, seeking life direction, deepening connection with ancestors, and overcoming destructive patterns. Bwiti is broader than addiction treatment alone.

Bwiti vs Iboga Retreats:

A Bwiti initiation is a religious and cultural rite within a living tradition. An iboga retreat may use iboga therapeutically without the wider religious practices or community initiation.

Safety:

Iboga can affect heart rhythm and blood pressure. Serious complications have occurred. Appropriate medical screening and experienced supervision are important before participating.

Note:

The cost fee covers the initiation only per person. Accommodation, flights, meals, transportation and all other personal expenses are the responsibility of the participant.
This is an onsite experience, we invite interested individuals to contact us via email: sales@shambalaiboga.com to reserve their spots upon making payment, so as to schedule and appropriate time, to fully experience Bwiti culture.

As a web developer and systems architect, my mind is constantly racing with code, startup logistics, and screen time. I was completely burned out and disconnected from my physical self. The Bwiti initiation was the most challenging yet profound experience of my life. It forced me out of my head and grounded me in a way nothing else has. The facilitators honored the tradition beautifully and helped me hit the ultimate reset button on my mind and spirit.

Between the constant high-pressure demands of running a tech startup and navigating the weight of my past struggles, I was looking for genuine spiritual healing. Going into a Bwiti initiation can be intimidating, but the facilitators were absolutely exceptional. They provided unparalleled support through every intense moment of the ceremony. I walked away with a profound connection to my roots and a deep sense of clarity. It was an inexplicable turning point that nothing else could give me.

If you are considering a Bwiti initiation, my biggest piece of advice is to go in with a completely open mind. After fighting a heroin and methadone addiction for nearly a decade, I needed something that actually addressed the root of my struggles rather than just managing the symptoms. I won’t sugarcoat it, the experience is incredibly taxing, both physically and mentally. It demands a lot from you, but the journey is just as profoundly enlightening. Over a year later, I am still entirely opiate-free. The traditional process broke through walls I couldn’t tear down myself, offering an inexplicable turning point in my life. Be prepared for an intense, grueling, but exceptionally rewarding reset. 😊

Before I traveled to Cameroon to visit the Shambalaiboga retreat, I was completely defeated. I was severely depressed, drinking too much, chain-smoking, and honestly had no hope left. Finding Shambala completely turned my life around.
The facilitators at the retreat are true professionals who ensure you are physically ready before administering the iboga root powder. I won’t sugarcoat it, the experience is not a walk in the park. It’s an intense, 14-hour physical and mental reset. You go through incredibly vivid visions and grueling emotional processing, but it felt like the medicine was forcefully breaking down all my negative behavioral patterns at the very root.
By the third day after the ceremony, the results were undeniable. My severe nicotine addiction vanished without a single craving, and the relentless anxiety in my head was replaced by total peace. Shambalaiboga gave me the resilience and clarity I desperately needed. Since my retreat, I’ve had to navigate a really painful divorce and financial struggles, but I’ve been able to handle it with a calm focus I never used to have, allowing me to be a much better father. I owe so much to the Shambalaiboga team and this incredible root powder. Highly, highly recommend making the trip.
